The University of Arizona Foundation is seeking a motivated and goal-oriented professional to join the College of Science Philanthropy Alumni and Engagement team as Associate Director of Development (ADO). The ADO will work to secure philanthropic support at the major-gift level from University alumni, friends of the College of Science, philanthropic foundations, and corporations to further the goals and objectives of the College of Science and the University of Arizona (UArizona). The ADO will be a key member of the College's development team reporting directly to the Assistant Dean for Philanthropy Alumni and Engagement for the College. The ADO will interact with the Dean as well as Department Heads on key initiatives that meet the College's priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Actively work with the College of Science Development Team planning and implementing all development activities.
  • Develop and execute strategic, personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for an assigned portfolio of 50-70 major-gift ($50,000 level or greater) donor prospects (individual, corporate, and foundation) through personal visits (in-person or Zoom), letters, phone calls, email and other methods.
  • Will qualify prospects and donors for major gifts. Plan, coordinate, and schedule 100+ personal visits annually with major gift prospects.
  • After an initial 3 to 6 month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of 100+ current or prospect donor visits and presentation of 15+ proposals per year, and a fundraising metric of at least $500,000 (with incremental increases after the first year).
  • Maintain up-to-date donor/prospect portfolio, including contact reports and proposals.
  • Actively work with any assigned area of focus and associated staff in expanding, cultivating and growing philanthropic support through their advisory boards.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Development and Alumni Engagement, Dean, assigned Department Heads and the President/CEO of UAF or designee on all matters related to development activities with the College and across the university including the development of strategic initiatives and formation of multi-unit collaborations.
  • Partner with and effectively utilize the development professionals and resources of the PAE.
  • Participate as the development/alumni liaison for assigned academic departments or programs.
  • Creatively leverage outreach activities (i.e., tours, lectures, exhibits) to develop new major gift prospects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent writing, speaking, interviewing and listening skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain powerful and productive relationships with donors as well as development colleagues and UA faculty and staff.
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Working knowledge of the ways donors can make charitable gifts, including cash, appreciated securities, real and personal property, and different planned giving methods.
  • Ability to translate technical scientific information into lay language for potential donors.
  • Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
  • Ability to make introductory phone call to get appointment with donor prospects.
  • Ability to make good decisions and exercise judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite products, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including working on weekends/evenings, overnight stays, and travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with demonstrating success in securing major gifts in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in constituent databases.
  • Experience applying fundraising principles and procedures.
